Summary

This week, I made the final call that I'd be spending Christmas alone cozied up here in New York City. Growing up in a multidenominational household, Christmas Eve has always been one of my favorite days of the year. But in 2020, we've all come to learn some difficult lessons. One I'm leaning into: it's important to not waste energy on the things we cannot control. I am consciously choosing the safe, more sane option (especially because COVID). For 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm chatting about how the "right" choice still feels a little selfish.

If you're new to this weekly segment, bonus, part of Hurtle, on Five Minute Friday, I chat through a story, something I'm going through, something that's

0:39.7

happening in my life. I share a thought prompt to take you into the weekend and then offer up some of

0:46.1

my content picks, some of the stuff that I think is really awesome that I want to share with you.

This week, tis the season, I'm chatting about Christmas. Now, I don't know

0:57.5

about you guys. I grew up in a multi-denominational household. So my mother is Jewish and my father

1:04.4

is Italian. And I, for my adult life, as long as I can remember, have been splitting my time between the two of them when it comes to Christmas time.

1:17.8

So I've done the exact same thing on Christmas Eve forever. I usually go out east. My grandmother lives out near the Hamptons and I go out east and I spend

1:29.1

Christmas Eve with my dad's side of the family and we eat all of the seat food because we're Italian.

1:36.3

And then we drink eggnog. I'm pretty sure my grandmother must put at least like three different

1:42.4

types of alcohol in the eggnog. It's always super boozy. And then we open gifts and all this is on Christmas Eve.

1:48.2

And it's just so special because I feel like life is just so hectic, especially in recent years.

1:55.3

And it's just such a beautiful opportunity for me to spend time with my family. There's also like other small

2:03.8

traditions that we enjoy on Christmas Eve. I have been tasked for some time now to be the

2:09.9

person who now makes grandma's signature Italian tricolor cookie recipe. They are my favorite.

2:16.8

I can't wait to make them. I think I'm going to make

2:18.1

them this weekend. We also always eat a bunch of stuff that we typically buy at Arthur Avenue in

2:24.0

the Bronx. If you've never heard of Arthur Avenue, it is amazing. It is this street uptown from

2:29.5

where I am that has all of the classic Italian shops. Like there's one place that you buy Mooselle.

2:35.0

There's another place that you buy olive bread.

2:38.2

There's another place that you buy canoles.
