Summary

When I tell you that the 20-miler I did in a real-feel of 100 degrees here in Tokyo was one of the most challenging moments of my year, that would be an understatement. Talking about finding the silver lining, what happens when preparation meets luck, and how finishing off a difficult day makes me feel leading into October's big dance. Plus: Answering a listener question about racing sneakers.

What's going on, everyone, everyone, Emily Abadi here. You are listening to Five Minute Friday from Hurtle live from Tokyo. It's been what a week. This is, I feel very grateful that when I travel, typically, I'm more often than not really good with sleep. It's been over a year since I've been to this part of

0:41.3

the world. I came to Tokyo for the first time last spring for the marathon. And I don't remember

0:50.2

having this much trouble with my jet lag. I got something like four hours of sleep the

0:58.7

first night. I graduated to a little bit less at three hours of sleep the second night. So I am

1:07.1

open to alternative suggestions on how to sort this out if anyone wants to hit my

1:13.5

DMs over at Emily Abani on social.

1:16.0

I digress.

1:17.4

I am talking about doing the best I can with what I have.

1:21.4

So yesterday I did my long run for the week.

1:32.9

And for context, it is something like 100 degrees real feel in Tokyo right now. It's quite warm and the humidity is up there. And I went into the morning

1:40.2

with a lot of reservations and a good deal of nerves. I understood that it was going to be

1:47.9

hard. I understood many of the things that were working against me. It was, like I said,

1:55.1

so warm. I did get five hours of sleep on the flight over my best night of sleep yet.

2:03.0

And I am in a completely different place, not in my own bed, etc.

2:10.0

However, I also recognize that I can do hard things.

2:14.7

And so yesterday I went out there and I decided to consciously take note of the

2:20.8

things that were going well. So let's take this back before I even went outside. I was up,

2:28.4

gosh, an hour and a half or two hours earlier than my alarm because of the jet lag. So I wake up and I'm

2:36.3

like, okay, I'm going to try to fall asleep for a bit. And when it doesn't work, I'm just going to stick

2:42.8

it out. That's exactly what happened. And I thought to myself, okay, what is good about this moment?

2:49.4

Okay, slow morning, super quiet,

2:51.6

let's enjoy it. Awesome. I journaled. I played nice music. I made a pour over coffee in my room
