Hello, I'm Jack Wilson. Welcome to the History of literature. episode 5 Greek tragedy part 1.

Let me start by describing a Facebook experience that I'm sure many of you will find familiar.

What we might call a tragedy has happened to one of our friends or loved ones.

The horrible post comes breaking the horrible news.

It reads like this.

I'm sorry to let you all know that my father was killed in a car crash last Tuesday night.

The funeral is tomorrow.

He was a beautiful man and we miss him terribly.

And you, dear listener, what do you do?

Your heart leaps into your throat.

Your eyes burn with tears.

And with a heavy heart, you reach for your computer mouse and hit the like button. Like? Like?
