a greener thumb. Today we're discussing lavender, a plant that has frustrated many gardeners and really it's not too

difficult to grow and so in today's episode we're going to demystify it.

The first thing to know about lavender is that you must respect where it came from.

It's a Mediterranean plant and so those growing conditions are going to be the ones that it prefers

What do I mean by that? I mean that you can grow it in a relatively

poor or unapproved soil. It doesn't need a ton of rich soil. It wants soil that is not going

to hold on to a ton of water. The recipe here is not a ton of water, but a ton of light.

It wants 10 plus hours of sun a day, if possible. Now, of course, you can grow it in colder climates and there's things that you can do to grow and I'm just saying this is what it wants if it was telling you lavender to human being this is what I need to thrive.

Now, if you're growing it in a colder climate,

then you do have to adjust this strategy.

In that situation, what I would highly recommend is growing it in containers so that you can protect it from the colder parts of the year.

So you can actually bring it in during late fall, overwinter, and then bring it back out.

Otherwise, it's just going to die in your garden,

and you're going to have a hard time.

So colder climates, you can bring it indoors,

you can kitty corner it right up against the south-facing window,

you can even supplement it with a grow light if you so choose, and that can be a way to grow lavender

If you're in a climate that's closer towards that Mediterranean climate, then of course you can just grow it outdoors.

Now, when it comes to harvesting your lavender, you want to wait until the flowers have opened maybe 25 to 50 percent or so.
