When I first started gardening, the fertility of my soil was not even on my radar. My main concerns were more practical. Choosing the crops,

figuring out when to plant them, the soil was frankly the last thing on my mind. What I realized

partially through some of the major failures of some

crops and fantastical success of others is that soil fertility and structure play a huge role

in the overall success of your garden. Just recently, in a book I received for Christmas called

the high-yield vegetable garden, I read this phrase,

care for the soil, not the crops. This is a great book, by the way, with lots of practical advice.

I'm going to link this for you in the show notes. The subject of fertile soil can be quite daunting,

and the fact that none of our garden spaces are the same

makes it kind of a tough issue for us to tackle in a broad manner so what I'm

gonna try to do for you today is to give you some basics and some examples and

then you can customize your plan to your particular needs the first thing we're

gonna talk about today is the soil pH.

This was completely foreign to me

as I didn't even take a chemistry class in high school.

I know, how did I get through high school

and college without ever taking chemistry?

I don't know, but I'll manage to not have to worry about that class.
