John 10: 27-30 - 'I know my sheep and they follow me.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 590 (in 'Jesus and Israel's faith in the One God and Saviour') - Only the divine identity of Jesus' person can justify so absolute a claim as "He who is not with me is against me"; and his saying that there was in him "something greater than Jonah,. . . greater than Solomon", something "greater than the Temple"; his reminder that David had called the Messiah his Lord, and his affirmations, "Before Abraham was, I AM", and even "I and the Father are one."

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast. So for today's reading,

0:18.6

we're going to be looking at John chapter 10 versus 27 to 30.

0:22.6

And it's worth pointing out that over the next few Sundays, you're going to hear similar readings to what you would hear in the weekdays.

0:31.0

But they're kind of grouped differently.

0:33.0

So some of this will sound familiar to you because you'll probably hear it during the weekdays either

0:38.3

this week or next week but the passages kind of start at different points and end at different points

0:44.5

so the verses a group differently so for example during the week you might hear from perhaps

0:49.8

john chapter 12 versus 12 to 20 and then on the weekend you might hear something like John chapter 12

0:56.1

versus 15 to 23 so the brackets of where the readings start and finish will be slightly different.

1:02.3

So today we're looking at John chapter 10 versus 27 to 30. Jesus said the sheep that belonged to me listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.

1:15.9

I give them eternal life. They will never be lost and no one will ever steal them from me.

1:23.2

The father who gave them to me is greater than anyone, and no one can steal from the father.

1:30.1

The father and I are one.

1:33.9

So that's our short reading today, but even that is densely packed with rich theological concepts.

1:39.5

And there's a whole lot you could say about what Jesus is saying here.

1:43.5

It's really quite profound profound and it has a lot

1:45.7

of implications for theology and for our spiritual life. So as always, we want to start by thinking about

1:51.4

the context. The last time we saw Jesus, he basically was speaking the parable of the good shepherd.

1:58.2

And you can hear that on the fourth Sunday of Easter in year B, and also on the

2:04.4

Monday of the fourth week of Easter in year A. So now he's in Jerusalem for the feast of the

2:10.5

dedication of the temple, and the Jewish leaders have approached him, and they've basically

2:14.5

demanded to know, are you the Messiah or not? And this is part of the
