Summary

Michael Salfino (The Athletic, Topps) and host Thomas Emerick take the 7 train to Shea Stadium as Bill Walsh's upstart Niners bring an early form of the West Coast offense to New York City. Steve DeBerg is starting at quarterback, but his voice amplifier is malfunctioning and Joe Montana will have to step in a bit. Visiting a young Jets team expected to make some noise in the early '80s, are the Niners ready for their close-up? This is Remember That Game, the podcast about sporting events that take you on a journey and chart the path of the zeitgeist. I'm your host Thomas Emerick, enjoy the show. In little more than one year through the very next season, Montana to Clark would become

0:06.5

up until that point the most famous play in football history.

If you would have told anybody in that stadium that day that would happen, none of us would

have believed it.

Michael, you were there in Shea Stadium to see Bill Walsh and his Niners coming off a

two and fourteen season bring their West Coast offense to New York City.

0:51.8

Were they ready for their close-up?

0:54.1

Probably not quite, but I would say that there were signs. They were already 2-0. The Jets came

1:00.1

into the game, 0-2. The Jets were coming off consecutive seasons with a young core,

1:05.8

and people were bullish on the 1980 team, and then things started to fall apart. I don't think,

1:13.2

you know, Bill Walsh, nobody really knew, obviously, about even the West Coast offense. It was

1:18.7

more like the Paul Brown offense. There was a quarterback that wasn't even starting that day,

1:25.3

and that's one of the interesting stories of this game as well

1:27.9

and basically looking back now you could see how that was a first real glimmer of what was coming

1:37.8

and coming very fast the glimmer on the shay stadium infield dirt where the Niners start their first drive and score in like under two and a half minutes.

1:49.2

Joe Montana, second year starting on the bench.

1:53.2

Steve DeBerg still slinging it early here and looking good.

1:56.4

Dimes the corner out to Charlie Young, 709ers.
