I'm Rob Stats Guerrera. Today is Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025. Here's what's happening with your San Francisco 49ers.

Today's preview is a fun one because it's first round draft pick Mikel Williams.

Now, I've made no secret of the fact that I was very high on Mikel before the draft.

And I have to admit, it's primarily due to how Dieter and Hutch talked about him.

He wins every time. He just wins every time. Everything he does just looks ready. I know what I

know. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but like I see what I'm seeing. This guy's incredible.

That's obviously a super high and optimistic opinion of Michael Williams. And needless to say, obviously, not everyone shared that opinion.

There was a lot of people that pointed to Michael Williams modest sack numbers in college

is a reason to worry.

Remember, he only had 14 sacks in three total years in college.

But if you are looking for reasons to be optimistic, consider this.

Over the last two seasons, Williams lined up inside 45% of the time as a pass rusher.

When you line up inside as a pass rusher, your sack numbers are naturally going to go down.

That's not just a Michael Williams thing.

That's an everybody thing. But when he was actually lined up as a five technique or wider on the

outside, Williams generated a 13.5% pressure rate that is very, very strong. It's probably why Williams himself told 49ers reporters after the draft that he's

really excited to go into Robert Sala's scheme for a very simple reason.

I feel like because I will, I play on edges.

Just being in a wide nine, the whole game all the time would allow me to make more plays

and would allow me just be a better play overall and have a better career.
