I'm Rob Stats Guerrera. Today is Tuesday, August 5th, 2025. Here's what's happening with your San Francisco 49ers. The Niners made a flurry of

moves yesterday, but we have to start with the most notable of them all. Kicker update. The kicking

competition is over and the winner is Jake Moody.

The Niners released Greg Joseph yesterday despite the fact that he had actually made more field goals to this point than Moody.

Now, if you're wondering why the Niners ended the kicking competition before a single preseason game has been played.

Here's Kyle Shanahan.

We had 13 guys out of practice today.

We got five guys on Pup.

It's just too many people to have that luxury.

You know, it's awesome to have two kickers, allow them to battle.

But they're not guys to really take reps.

We need more people to take reps for us.

I mean, it's not here, but there's never a,

I mean, whether you have one kicker in the building or two, which you rarely have two,

kickers always know they're competing with whoever's out there. So I don't see it much different.

To be clear, the team could always cut Jake Moody and re-sign Greg Joseph if Moody's

struggles, but that doesn't really do anything to quiet the narrative that Kyle Shannahan

just doesn't really care about special teams.

They're sticking with Jake Moody despite no real reason to other than the fact that he was
