I'm Rob Stats Guerrera. Today's Monday, February 26th, 2024. Here's what's happening with your San Francisco 49ers.

The Niners got some good news on Friday when it was announced that the salary cap for the coming season is going to be $255 million.

That is an increase of $30 million over last year.

Obviously, that is fantastic news for the 49ersers who have a lot of things they need to do

this offseason. First and foremost, figuring out if they can extend Brandon Ayuk. This definitely

helps. Now, obviously, it helps all 32 teams, but remember, they're trying to get the roster that

the 49ers already have.

It is much, much safer as an NFL team to spend your money resigning your good players

than it is to go out into the scary free agent market.

You're going to see it next month when free agency starts.

Teams are going to be thrown out crazy dollar amounts

to all these people. Very, very few of them live up to those contracts and make the impact that we

hope or those teams hope they're going to make when those deals are signed. Case in point as we get

to the second big story of the day. The 49ers, one of their biggest moves last year, was bringing in Isaiah Oliver to shore up

the nickel cornerback spot, right?

Remember, Steve Wilkes called him the best free agent corner on the market.

Well, it didn't quite work out.

In the slot, Isaiah Oliver allowed 43 receptions on 46 targets for a 106.9 passer rating.

Ugh. Needless to say, now that Wilkes has been fired, it wasn't long before Isaiah Oliver was going to get the boot.

And the 49ers did that on Friday last week, cutting Oliver, a move, by the way, that saves the team $2.4 million.
