Summary

In this solo episode, I’m breaking down how to start your side hustle without quitting your job or putting your paycheck at risk. I’m sharing what I’ve learned from building Side Hustle Pro from two very different places: one, when I was unemployed with plenty of time but no stability, and two, when I was working full-time at NPR with stability but limited time.

What I’ve learned is this: there is no “perfect” situation for side hustling. What matters is how you build, not whether you quit your job first.

I’m walking you through my five rules for side hustling the Side Hustle Pro way, plus a bonus rule to help you decide when you’re actually ready to leave your job on purpose, with a plan, and on your own terms.

If you’ve been feeling the pull to build something but don’t want to move out of panic or pressure, this episode will help you build quietly, strategically, and stress-free.

In This Episode, I Share:

  • Why keeping your job can actually give you leverage and clarity as you build
  • The mindset shift that turns your paycheck into startup capital
  • How to choose a side hustle that fits your real life, energy, and capacity
  • How to decide in advance what “ready to leave” really looks like backed by numbers and a plan

So let's get started. So if you're tuning into this, you probably want more freedom, more flexibility,

0:21.7

more control over your time, right?

0:22.7

But you also need stability.

0:25.6

I get it.

0:26.8

Because just like me, you've got real bills, you've got real responsibilities, and none of those

0:32.2

stops just because you want to explore starting your own business.

0:35.9

So this episode is about how to start your

welcome back to side hustle pro. I'm your host, Nikaela. And today we're getting into

0:49.6

how to side hustle the side hustle pro way, which is to make sure that your bills are paid

so you can side hustle stress free.

0:59.9

So I want to start by grounding this conversation in reality.

1:03.9

I've experienced side hustling from two very different perspectives.

1:07.4

One, when I was unemployed coming out of business school.

1:12.8

And two, when I was employed working full time for school, and two, when I was employed,

1:18.0

working full time for NPR. So both of these scenarios taught me something different and taught me something very important. So when I was unemployed, I had plenty of time, but no stability.

1:24.4

When I was at NPR, I had security and stability, but not as much time. So neither of these

1:30.4

situations is necessarily better for side hustling. And that's a mistake that a lot of people make.

1:35.5

Like there's no ideal scenario. It is about how you hustle and what you do, not necessarily the

1:42.2

scenario. So what matters is how you build. So if you're listening
