Summary

Imagine you are in charge of the weekly grocery shopping for a family of four, and each week, you get a new assignment. Week one, you’re asked to buy the healthiest possible food for your family. Week two, you’re asked to choose foods that are healthiest for the planet. Week three, you’re asking to choose foods produced fairly, meaning the workers and employees in the supply chain are treated well. Week four, you’re asked to do all three previous challenges at once: health, environment, fair trade.

Could you do it? I couldn’t. On this week’s podcast, you’ll meet an author attempting to find a solution to this seemingly impossible yet crucial goal of our food system.

Learn:

  • 5 thing you can do to make a change
  • Nutrition for you
  • Health for the planet
  • Fair trade for workers
  • A way forward

Let's imagine you're in a family of four and for this particular experiment you have one month

0:14.8

and the family elects you as the grocery shopper of the family and each week all four of you sit

0:20.6

down and you decide what you will prioritize at the grocery store and you have just a very small

0:25.4

list of things you can prioritize and you'll go week by week. Week number one, your assignment is

0:30.5

to get the healthiest food you can for your family. That's tough but it's doable. You're going to

0:34.4

pick out the most nutrient dense, nutritious foods, natural foods, minimally processed foods,

0:38.9

you'll run around on the peripheries of the grocery store, fill up your carton off you go.

0:42.8

Week number two, it starts to get a little more challenging. Your assignment is to buy the foods

that are the healthiest for the planet. Forget about your family for now. Just the planet,

0:51.9

prioritize the planet. Now you're going in and you're looking at the organics aisle and you're

0:56.8

trying to think about what's locally grown and does that really matter. That gets pretty challenging.

1:12.9

you're supposed to fill your grocery cart for the family with the food that is the most fair trade

1:19.3

meaning there are the workers who created that food, whether it's asparagus or a can of soup.

1:25.3

You want to make sure that they were treated fairly and ethically. This one you really struggle with,

1:30.9

right? You have like five items in your cart and one of them is fair trade coffee,

1:35.7

one of them is fair trade chocolate because I have that little stick around them and then after

1:39.2

that you're pretty stuck. You find some local organic apples, you're pretty sure those are okay,

1:43.7

but you're pretty stuck and you go back to the family and you're frustrated and they're frustrated

1:48.0

okay, week number four. Final week of our thought experiment here. You have to mix all three. You have
