collapse of Grant's peripheral strategy in Virginia in the spring of 1864. With the last episode,

we talked about the Battle of New Market, which took place in the Shenandoah Valley on May 15, 1864,

and resulted in a victory by John C.

Breckenridge's Confederates over the federal force led by Franz Siegel.

Breckenridge's victory at Newmarket allowed him to send 2,500 priceless reinforcements to Robert Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, which was locked in a fierce

struggle with the Army of the Potomac. At the end of the last episode, we said that far to the

east of the Shenandoah Valley, on May 15th, the same day the Battle of Newmarket was fought,
