statement of intent when he said, I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer.

When Ulysses S. Grant sized up the events of May 10th, he reached a number of conclusions,

the most important of which was that Upton's charge, if properly supported, would have resulted

in the decisive victory that had so far eluded the Federals.

Camp gossip blamed the failure quite unfairly on Mott's division. And Grant accepted this

assessment. Yet, in reality, the Army of the Potomac as a whole wasn't exactly carrying out

orders with a snap in its step,

and this seemed particularly the case with Warren's Fifth Corps.
