I was hesitant to send my experience in, because they are at the mundane end of your usual

conjuring film was very encouraging. My wife and I have had many experiences, and most of them have

been positive, and believe it or not, life-affirming. Not a term that I like, but it fits.

Having that reassurance that death is not the end,

and that past loved ones still care for the living is incredibly comforting.

I've experienced the smell of my grandfather's tobacco.

As I live on a farm where neither me nor my wife smokes, it is inexplicable,

and my grandmother's perfume.

I guess brain scientists have an explanation, but I believe it is them communicating their presence.

I have, on three occasions, sat with loved ones in their final days. On two occasions, they have waited until I left the room before passing away. On the third occasion, my father-in-law lingered until his wife left the room. She had been holding his hand for days before slipping away. I was there and saw the moment he went. Nurses tell me this is very common. It is as if they can't tear themselves away until the loved one leaves

or that they don't want to put the loved one through the experience of their dying only speculation on my part

one of these was my stepmother anne she was a lively character who had beaten cancers, operations and a ruptured aorta.

When she was told she could not go home and would have to go into care,

she turned her face to the wall and went into a coma.

She died a week later, just after I left her side to fetch a cup of coffee.
