Summary

In 2021, US troops withdrew from Afghanistan, ending a conflict that had been brutally fought for almost 20 years. While the news dominated the headlines, fewer may have heard the story of when the CIA first entered Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11. Today Katty and Anthony are joined by former CIA analyst and host of Goalhanger’s latest podcast, The Rest Is Classified, David McCloskey, to discuss this fascinating story. Hello and welcome. Today, Anthony and I want to tell you about a brand new podcast from

0:11.8

Goalhanger. The rest is classified, which will tell the best stories from the world of espionage.

0:17.7

It's hosted by my friend and colleague, National Security journalist Gordon

0:22.5

Carrera, and the man we are joined by now, the former CIA analyst turned spy novelist,

0:28.5

David McCloskey. David, I'm so excited about this. I was literally waiting for the first

0:34.0

episode. And when it dropped, I listened on the day it came out.

0:37.8

It's such a great idea.

0:39.3

0:45.0

So what are you trying to do with the podcast?

0:47.1

Yeah, well, thanks for having me on.

0:48.9

And thank you, Katty, for that wonderful endorsement of the show. Hey, listen, any episode that starts with a character

1:08.0

I mean, of course, we're trying to entertain, but we're also trying to give listeners insight into a world that I think is pretty opaque from the outside, pretty

1:16.1

framed by Hollywood or by leaks to the media.

1:20.1

I think it is difficult when you're sort of outside that world to really grasp how it

1:24.0

functions, like the nuts and bolts of it.

1:26.4

And that's what we're trying to do. So we're

1:27.8

going to tell stories from the past. I mean, we started with stories about Iran in 1953. We're doing a

1:34.7

series now on the CIA in Afghanistan immediately after September the 11th. And so we're going to do

1:40.7

sort of all across history and we're going to tell spy stories from all over the world.
