The Obesity Pandemic
Dr. Linda Anegawa
----------
Hundreds of years ago, a portly belly was a sign of wealth. The royals ate and rank more than their fill while the serfs starved and toiled on the land. Today, not much has changed. Some of the wealthiest, most developed countries are plagued by weight gain and obesity, and the problem is quickly accelerating.

Pre-existing medication conditions were one of the biggest risk factors during the pandemic, but did you know that 69 percent of the U.S. population has at least one these risk factor? Their weight puts them at risk.

On this weeks' podcast, Dr. LInda Anegawa shares her research and positive focus for a metabolically healthier future.

Listen & learn:

  • Body positivity vs. celebrating sickness - can it go too far?
  • Why you might consider getting a Coronary Calcium Scan and a Lipoprotein Fractionation test to better understand your risk factors
  • How a ketogenic diet can cause short term hormonal challenges
  • Why obesity is the #1 health threat for most people and the obvious area to focus on for the greatest impact

home, not traveling more than ever before. For some people, they took it as an opportunity

to get in the best shape of their lives. They're doing home workouts. They're practicing

0:16.5

on Zoom. They're doing downloaded classes all of the above. For a lot more people, they've

put on extra weight. They are less active than ever before. Because of restrictions and rules,

0:25.8

they haven't been able to enjoy the activities that they love. As a result, their health has suffered

it's kind of a bitter paradox. In order to protect our health, we stayed home and then we couldn't

A ketogenic diet, if you've never heard of it before, is an extremely, extremely low carb diet,

0:48.8

like less than 50 grams, maybe even less than 30 grams of carbs per day, which you can basically get

0:54.1

just from smelling a cookie. Extremely low protein also because protein can turn into glucose in

1:01.1

your body. Essentially what you're talking about is a very, very high fat diet. The reason this

1:06.2

has become so popular is because it's very satiating. It makes you feel very full. You can eat pretty

1:11.6

much as much fat as you want because you won't want that much. It's relatively easy to stick to

1:17.5

in the short term. People lose weight and weight loss is important. Of course, other things are

1:23.1

important too, like being able to enjoy your life now and then, being able to do something that's

1:28.3

sustainable, not just for a week, but for much, much longer. But if all else fails, getting in control

1:34.1

of your weight, of course, is such a big health hurdle to overcome that a lot of people are starting

1:38.9

with keto. I applaud whatever people want to experiment with health and wellness, but I applaud

1:43.1

even more things that people do with their eyes wide open, knowing their risks and rewards,

1:47.2

and also thinking long-term. Anybody can starve themselves for a couple of weeks. Anybody can save

1:53.9

money for a couple of months. Anybody can grin and bear it in a bad relationship for a number of
