What did this proposed statue, this lighthouse, intended for the Suez Canal?

What did it look like?

So this statue was supposed to be an Egyptian woman lifting a lamp.

She would have the Egyptian outfit and she would hold a lamp with their right arm, at

least on the sketches we have. And so we keep here at the Museum Bartoldi, the terracotta model

that Bartoldi met for this project. It's completely crazy when you think about it. And Bartolini

knew it, actually. Because, so he traveled to the US in

1871 knowing nobody in the US nobody knows him what is once again pretty crazy is that

right from the boat that brings him for the first time to the US through New York he already

spots this island that is called then Bedloe

Islands that will later become Liberty Island. So Bartolini decided to have at least one part of

the monument ready for 1876. And which part was that? And this was the right arm with the torch.

One part of the statue was easy to identify and very significant already because you already had this

symbol of the light. So it was easy to associate it with the monument and the idea of liberty

already, just with this part.
