Summary

Jerald and Sandra Tanner were raised in the LDS faith, both with a strong Mormon family history. Jerald is the great-great-grandson of John Tanner, well known for his sizable financial contributions to Joseph Smith and the LDS church in 1835 when the church was deeply in debt. Sandra Tanner is a great-great-granddaughter of Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church. As teenagers, before they met, Jerald and Sandra were challenged by different people and events to examine the origins of Mormonism. Soon after their introduction, they jointly began researching Mormonism and became engaged. Both accepted Christ during these early years of study and have left the Mormon church. They are both active members of a local Christian church in Salt Lake City. This episode explores Sandra and Jerald’s early years before forming Utah Lighthouse Ministries.

0:37.5	location. We're here at Utah Lighthouse Ministries in downtown Salt Lake City with Sandra Tanner.
0:47.1	For those of you who don't know, Sandra and her beloved husband Gerald are kind of famous
0:55.2	throughout Mormonism and someone say infamous for the ministries which they created many, many years
1:01.9	ago. They started struggling with their faith in the church, let's just say in the 50s and started
1:09.8	their ministries in the 60s and they've been sort of labeled as the anti-Mormon sort of of the 20th
1:19.1	and 21st centuries within the church for many, many decades. Many believing Mormons who are raised
1:25.7	in the church were taught to view them as scary and as sinister and as evil people.
1:33.0	And that's one perspective, but many of the people that I've spoken with have interacted with
1:39.2	the Tanner's over the years and have found them to be delightful and honest and caring people.
1:46.3	And so the purpose of this interview is today is to ask some questions to Sandra to learn
1:51.2	about her life, about Gerald's life, to learn more about their motivations for where they started
1:56.1	UTLM and to learn about all the many ways in which they were sort of in the middle of almost
2:03.8	every significant, let's just say, controversy or a historical event in the church for the past four
2:11.2	or five decades. So I'm really excited to be here. This is an interview I've wanted to do for a long time.
