The village of sag harbor sits on the northern shore of Long Island, within a collection

of eastern Long Island communities, generally known today as the Hamptons, a popular summertime

retreat for New York's most affluent residents. A typical stroll through any Hampton's village

today will put you in contact with media moguls, supermodels, fashion editors, influencers and movie stars.

But whine the clock back 130 years, and you will find another type of VIP who's a bit more camera shy, an entity on vacation from the spirit world.

In the year 1895, the residents of Sag Harbor were terrorized by just such a creature,

not merely a ghost, but a ghost who was heavily armed.

In 1895, the New York Times, believe it or not, reported on this disturbing specter which drove the village into a collective horror.

Quote, there is something the matter with the drinking water in this village.

A number of young men have seen a ghost several times recently while on their way home late at night. The apparition usually jumps up from behind a bush and is described as wearing a high hat and carrying an army musket.

The ghost, according to those who say they have met it, is fully six feet in height and built in proportion.

Unfrequented side streets have been the ghost's favorite places for a stroll,

and pedestrians out after dark have met the strange being in different

parts of the village. Since the ghost made his first appearance, many young women have been

compelled to spend their evenings alone, while the young men out late have suddenly developed a desire

for each other's company. Hmm.

The sale of firearms has become quite brisk in the village.
