I am Kat Angus. This is the podcast about all the pop culture you love and hate simultaneously. This week we were talking about the 2006 movie Stick It. Stick it! This is Gymnastic, Bring It On, but Gymnastics. Yes, |
| 1:00.9 | done by the same person who wrote Bring It On. And I think her, either her directorial |
| 1:06.1 | debut or her second directorial effort after Aquamarine. I can't tell which one it is. I think this was her first and possibly only directorial. Maybe she wrote Aquamarine. That's what it is then, yes. Okay, yes. Tell me about your feelings about Stick It. I like Stick It. And this was a lot better than I remembered it being. I remembered it being kind of just like, yeah, you didn't quite do it, but okay. You didn't quite stick it? Didn't quite stick it. And then watching it this time, it was a lot, the jokes landed a little bit better. I found the sort of attitude was good, but as with when I first saw this, when it first came out, I feel like the ending is a little bit muddled. |
| 1:44.7 | And I feel like what they're trying to say, |
| 1:46.5 | kind of they don't really fully figure it out. |
| 1:49.7 | And I think the movie is kind of hampered by the fact that because it's gymnastics, |
| 1:57.0 | we don't see like one big number that everybody does together. |
| 2:00.5 | And that kind of feels like, well, that should be the team cohesion that we finally get to see. And but by the nature of the sport, that's not what happens. Totally. And I just, I, it's the kind of thing where like they're big, their big protest at the end. I'm like, I understand it. but also I'm not quite sure what you think you're, what you want to happen from here or what, like, what you think this is going to, I don't know. So I totally, so I don't think the ending quite makes it, but I think Missy Peregrim is excellent in this lead in this really, in this role. I think, uh, yeah, I'm surprised, Like, she still works. She was on Rookie Blue for me. She's been now on FBI. She mainly plays cops now. But, like, I thought this movie would have blown up her career more than it did. But I think she's very good. It's surprising to see Jeff Bridges in a movie, in a bring it on type movie. But I guess True Grit hadn't come out yet, and like, he was sort of in the weird area where he was working regularly, but he wasn't an Oscar winner yet. Yeah. But, and like, I think some of the, I think there's a lot of really good supporting performances here. I like this movie more than I thought I was going to this time around, but again, it just kind of falls apart a little bit in the end. I agree. I agree with all of that. For Jeff Bridges, I also was very surprised to see him here. But then I was wondering if it was sort of similar to Donald Sutherland taking on The Hunger Games. And everyone was like, why did you do that? And he was like, because I really loved that this message was being given to kids. And I like, that's one of what he said when he was alive. He was like, that's one of the roles I was proudest of because I loved the idea of encouraging kids to be politically active and engaged and push back. That's great. So maybe in a similar way, Jeff Bridges was like, this is a smart movie. |
| 3:41.4 | It's smarter than some of the fare I see for people at this age. |
| 3:45.7 | And there's this compelling angle about pushing back against the system. |
| 3:50.4 | Sure. |
