podcast. My name is Rich and I'm Tracy. Hello y'all welcome to the

podcast. As promised in the last show this episode will be a bit of a postscript to the just concluded making Mississippi Howell

story arc. As we look at what actually did happen to Federal Cavalry Commander Major General William Soy Smith who was missing in

action when Sherman reached Meridian. As y'all will recall William to comes to

Sherman wanted Smith to lead a strong force of Union

cavalry from Memphis in western Tennessee down into northern Mississippi, following the line of the

Memphis and Ohio Railroad to Meridian

where Smith would meet up with Sherman who would arrive there after marching

right across Central Mississippi from Vicksburg.

But as we said in the last episode, other than receiving a message saying that the cavalry

had made a belated departure from Memphis, Sherman then didn't hear a thing from Smith and had

no idea what had happened to him.

When Sherman reached Meridian on February 14th, there was no sign of Smith, even though Sherman

had expected the cavalry to arrive there before him.
