By this, Louis the Sun King leveraged the enormous wealth of his kingdom to pay Charles to make war by his side.

And contained a secret clause of which Charles's people would not have approved,

whereby Louis promised substantial bribes to King Charles should he convert to Catholicism, and then backed it up with

the promise of a police force of 6,000 French troops to invade and subdue any problems this
