And so one of the old timers says to me, how did you get the job, kid?

And I said, well, my grandfather used to work here, years back, and my mom knows some

of his friends.

And he goes, well, really, who's your grandfather?

Now, Italian Americans on Staten Island who live in that circle have nicknames.

And so he was two beers, two beers, the feral.

So I said, well, two beers, the feral.

You'd have thought I'd mentioned George Washington, and a couple of weeks later, after they verified

my story, the president of the union came over and he said, kid, you're not going to

shape up today with the carpenters.

You just need to come to this building in the middle of, it was affectionately called

a shit house in the middle of the dry dock, where the bathroom was.

And he goes, you just need to hang out here.

You know, who works here now, and anybody looks like a cop or anybody coming around just

bang on the side of the door.

I had no idea why I come to find out the book he's taking numbers in the morning.

And I had to figure out a way to get out of that, because my mom was adamant that I would

have nothing to do with that world.
