As we said at the end of the last episode, we're heading back to Virginia with this show.

As you guys will recall, the last time we visited the Old Dominion and checked in on what was

going on with Robert E. Lee and George Meade,

it was with episodes 416, 17, and 18,

when we looked at what happened during the Bristow Station campaign in October 1863.

As y'all will recall after AP Hill got his hat handed to him at Bristow Station on October 14th and the federal successfully

withdrew into a strong defensive position near the old bullrun

battlefield. Robert Lee decided to end what would be his last offensive campaign against the Army of the Potomac.

Exactly. And after Bristol Station, Lee pulled the Army of Northern Virginia back below the Rappahannock River.

As long time listeners will be aware, the Rappahannock had more than once served as the line of demarcation between Confederate and Federal

Forces in Central Virginia. In 1862, the Rappahannock had separated the two armies, and when Ambrose Burnside threw

the Army of the Potomac across the river at Fredericksburg that December, he suffered a crushing defeat in front of Maurice Heights, after which he pulled his

battered army back across the Rappahannock.
