Summary

Respiratory Therapy

with Joe Lewis

If you're interested in pranayama and breathwork, there is so much more to discover than simply "oxygenation." As a student of yoga breathing for over a decade, there continues to be a lack of real scientific teaching, so on this week's podcast, we'll nerd out on biomechanics and chemistry of breathing.

Listen & Learn:

  • Why you must consider both oxygenation and ventilation
  • The importance of C02
  • Ideal blood oxygen content
  • Education and career opportunities for potential respiratory therapists
  • The utility of arterial blood gas (ABG) in an ICU

In recent years, I've been doing speaking and teaching

0:21.0

and a lot of research, and I just get so excited by how

0:23.7

accessible how simple how safe it is how everyone can really learn it. It just

takes you know two to five minutes to have a really profound impact on your

nervous system. Unfortunately most of of the books, most of the

0:33.9

teachings out there, they're really confusing, they're pretty esoteric, they're

0:37.6

pretty hyperbolic, and they don't really give you a good idea of how things work.

And so I'm always trying to meet people who keep

0:44.5

things simple and focus on the science on this week's podcast. You'll basically

0:48.7

be listening in on a research call that I did with a respiratory therapist which is a profession I didn't even

0:53.9

know existed but really great information about oxygen and CO2 about

0:58.9

ventilation and oxygenation and a whole bunch of other nerdy breathing topics which hopefully will be of interest to you.

If you're not so interested in the science of breathing might be a podcast to skip but I know there's quite a lot of breath nerds out there so hopefully you'll find this interesting
