0:20.1	We continue on with the Gospel of Matthew with chapter 14, starting in verse 1. At that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendance, this is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead. That is why miraculous powers are at work in him. Now Herod had arrested John and bound
0:40.2	him and put him in prison because of Herodius, his brother Philip's wife. For John had been saying to him,
0:46.1	it is not lawful for you to have her. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people
0:51.6	because they considered John a prophet.
0:59.4	On Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodius, danced for the guests, and pleased Herod's so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
1:03.3	Prompted by her mother, she said, give me here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.
1:08.5	The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests,
1:12.9	he ordered that her request be granted, and had John beheaded in the prison.
1:17.5	His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl who carried it to her mother.
1:22.1	John's disciples came and took his body and buried it.
1:25.5	Then they went and told Jesus.
1:29.1	This is an interesting side story that's going on at the same time that Jesus is doing his
1:35.6	ministry, and Jesus, remember, has been teaching a lot of parables recently, and we've been
1:40.3	seeing a lot about the kingdom of heaven. Remember a lot of those parables where the kingdom of heaven is like. And then we jump back with this very jarring story about a kingdom that is
1:50.2	very unheavenly. And John the Baptist has been giving Herod the Tetrarc a hard time. Herod,
1:56.3	one of the many sons called Herod from Herod the Great by a number of different wives. I think
2:02.0	he had at least four different wives. Herod has been sleeping with his brother's wife, and John
2:06.4	calls him on it. And so John gets arrested. But Herod didn't want to do anything with John,
