Summary

Encouraging more people to take part in healing the ecosystem begins with raising awareness of both the challenges and the remedies. Basil Camu, shares exactly that in his book, “From Wasteland to Wonder: Easy Ways We Can Help Heal Earth in the Sub/Urban Landscape.” Basil is my guest in this week’s encore episode.

Hey everybody, it's Joe. Today I've selected an encore episode that was very popular when it first aired. It's with Basil Camus of Leaf and Limb Tree Service. And what I love about Basil is he is a master arborist. So if you're going to talk anything about tree care, Basil has the knowledge and the experience. And the other thing I love about his company is that

0:21.9

their mission is to save trees, not cut them down. Yay for that. And we need more basil in the world.

0:28.9

So sit back and enjoy this episode and just looking ahead. Next week, we're going to do another

0:34.7

encore of my second conversation with him.

0:43.5

Entirely different, but every bit is good and very timely for the upcoming cold season ahead.

0:45.5

So you have that to look forward to.

0:49.7

But first things first, here's today's conversation, and I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, everybody. This is Joe Lampel, the Joe Behind Joe Gardner, and welcome to the Joe Gardner show.

1:03.1

Today is a great story about a man after my own heart, basically. Somebody who loves trees.

1:12.9

And the timing of this episode is interesting because a few weeks ago, I read a post in the New York Times by previous podcast guest, Margaret Rinkle.

1:18.2

She writes a column in the New York Times, and this one particular article was about how the cutting down of mature trees doesn't get enough attention, and people just tend to take it for

1:22.1

granted sometimes and just think it's okay to replace a sapling and everything will be just as good.

1:27.1

But she went on to share some sentiments and gave some great examples,

1:30.4

and then I went on to read all the comments about all the sad stories of all the big,

1:35.2

mature trees that were getting cut down just because they were in the way or for no particular

1:40.1

reason, and just on and on and on.

1:42.6

There were hundreds of comments like that. And it really is

1:45.8

sad because it takes 50 years or more for a tree to mature to a substantial size. And that's when the

1:52.8

real ecological value of that tree is able to shine. But it just seems like they are a commodity

1:57.8

these days and that they can easily be replaced, at least by many

2:01.1

people, not by me, not by Margaret, and likely many of you. And ironically, today, as I record this

2:07.6

before the podcast goes live tomorrow, I noticed that our friend Margaret Roach just did a feature on
