Summary

436-37: Robert Trent Jones Sr. is regarded as the most historically significant golf architect of the 20th century. The fabric of golf in America - possibly the world - is embodied in the extraordinary career of Robert Trent Jones in golf course design. In this abbreviated conversation with New York Times bestselling author and internationally distinguished historian James R. Hansen, Hansen shares the compelling life story of the man who designed or redesigned a staggering 400+ courses spread over 43 U.S. states and 27 other nations, including instantly recognizable names as Spyglass Hill in California, and Ballybunion (New Course) in Ireland. James R. Hansen is a Professor of History at Auburn University in Alabama, a lifelong golfer, and his first book in 2005 "First Man" is the only authorized biography of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The book is available in hardcopy or ebook versions in our Golfers’Mart book section at GolfSmarter.comFor exclusive content and first access check out Corrected Mistakes on Substack: https://substack.com/@correctedmistake  Learn more about your ad choices. And I love the title of it, especially when I was reading what it meant.

0:39.9

So why don't we just start with that? The book is called A Difficult Par. Where did that come from?

0:46.0

Well, literally, it comes from the basic principle that Robert Trent Jones, Sr. followed in the design of his golf courses, really from the very start

0:54.2

of his career to the end. And that was the idea that every good hole should be a difficult

0:59.5

par, but an easy boge. So that was kind of the ruling architectural principle for him.

And I thought not only was at a mainstay of his architectural strategy, but I thought the title also,

1:14.9

in a more metaphorical way, conveyed some other aspects of his career because he had lots

of ups and downs and was an immigrant boy that had big ambitions.

1:25.9

So it's really a uniquely American dream kind of story.

1:29.6

And so the difficult par conveys, I hope, more than just the architectural principle.
