Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. Why are we unhappy? And sometimes we're

0:12.0

really unhappy so that we don't even want to live.

0:15.0

How is that possible?

0:18.0

I think your answer and most people's answers would be well because of the circumstances. There's things that have happened

0:25.6

in my life and another person's life and it's causing me or them to be unhappy. It's very simple.

0:36.8

And yet there's a doubt. There's a questioning of this answer because we probably all know someone or lots of

0:41.7

people who are in difficult situations too, at least from our perspective,

0:47.2

that seem to be happy, that seem to be doing okay, and even thriving, and yet we or someone we know is going through a similar situation perhaps not even

0:57.2

near as intense and contemplating suicide or severely depressed.

1:03.2

How is that possible?

1:05.6

Well it's possible if and only if one thing is true, and that is the external circumstances really aren't that important.

1:15.0

What's important is how we interpret them.

1:19.0

Since probably most of us are going to go through breakups and half of us are going to go through

1:24.7

divorces, we're going to know a lot of people that have done this.

1:28.8

And we know people that were deeply in love with someone and that other person broke up with them or asked them for a divorce.

1:35.0

Now sometimes when this happens that one person who is asked for a separation or divorce goes into a severe depression and they're not doing well and they may not

1:46.0

do well for the rest of their lives truly and yet other people thrive and do exceptionally well and look back on it and are not in any way

1:56.0

remorseful over the breakup or the divorce and with time they're even happy and this is just one example of a myriad of examples that I could give you.

2:08.0

Again we all know people perhaps ourselves who had a job that we liked. And for whatever reason,

2:15.0

downsizing, we did something wrong, we got a bad boss, whatever it may have been,

2:21.0

we got fired, we got let go off. And again, some people go into a very serious

2:26.9

depression. They're angry, they're upset, and it takes them perhaps years to come out of it.
