0:40.5	leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, sort of from the mid-70s up until about 1990.

1:07.0	if you're an American listener in particular, I mean, you may never have heard of Ed Broadbent.
1:11.9	But he's someone who I admired a lot and whose work and writing I was very interested in before I knew him personally.
1:18.5	He's somebody who's incredibly thoughtful.

1:23.5	He grew up in Oshua, which big, big union town, born in the 1930s, around the time of the big
1:29.6	Osha strike, which effectively created industrial unionism in North America.
1:34.7	By the 1980s, Ed became the most popular, you know, individual politician in Canada, and he
1:40.2	took the parliamentary left in Canada to greater electoral heights than it had reached before.

1:47.7	He was friends with great American socialist Michael Harrington, who wrote a lovely flourish about Ed in his 1988 autobiography, the Long Distance Runner.
