You're listening to the mens rea podcast and this is the story of Sarah Payne. Oh, Sarah Payne was born on the 13th of October 1991. She was a lovely easy baby and a fun child to be around.

Her parents Michael and Sarah met while they were both in school and they started dating.

They fell in love and quickly started a family. They had two sons and then daughter Sarah

followed by little sister Charlotte all within a few years.

They both came from working class backgrounds but as a family they always got by

and had a good support system from their own families.

Sarah worked in pubs mainly and Mike had initially worked in off licenses like his parents had done

diagnosed with manic depression. But despite these problems the pains had a very busy family life, and eventually after many moves settled in a three bedroom

council house in Arch Road in Hersham. They'd moved about a lot while Mike was managing off

licenses but they'd moved back to Walton, the town that they were from, when he began

having health difficulties in order to be closer to family and support. He began working nights,

first at a petrol station and then as a paint sprayer in a factory.

Their house was messy and lively and full of laughter. A lot of the laughter was from Sarah. She was a very

girly girl and loved frilly dresses and makeup. She was very sensitive and in touch with her emotions.

Sarah loved make-believe, magic, fairies, and rainbows.

She loved school and would cry at the summer holidays.

She was chosen by the school in her final year in primary to be a so-called befriender, an older kid who would look out for others who were having a tough time,
