Jeremiah chapter 1, verses 4 through 8.

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.

Before you were born, I consecrated you.

I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said,

Ah, Lord God, behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. But the Lord said to me,

do not say I am only a youth. For to all to whom I send you, you shall go. And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

Do not be afraid of them. For I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.

What an amazing introduction to the prophet Jeremiah and specifically God's promise to him. Now obviously there's

a unique picture taking place here in Jeremiah's life as God is appointing him as a prophet

this time and this plays for God's purposes at At the same time, we know from all the Scripture that many of the things that God is saying to Jeremiah here

are true for everyone who's a child of God who's trusted in Christ.

We know that God knew us before we were even formed in the womb, that God has known us

from eternity past to eternity future. Psalm 139 makes that clear. Romans 8 talks about how God has

predestined us to be conformed to the likeness of his son.

The whole picture that Scripture gives us is of a God who loves us intimately

before we were known by anyone else, even ourselves in that sense.

And then you feel in this passage Jeremiah's inadequacy and insecurity saying, I don't even know how to speak.

I'm so young.

And God says, your sufficiency is not based on what you bring to the table.

It's based on what I bring to the table for you and in you.
