I'm going to be able to be. Last week, the Supreme Court heard oral argument in Cox v. Sony, a case with huge ramifications for the future of the Internet.

The question at the heart of the case is,

who is responsible for copyright infringement online?

In this case, a group of copyright holders sued not individual infringers,

but an internet service provider.

That ISP did not encourage or facilitate infringement. Rather, it simply didn't do enough in the rights holders view to terminate the accounts used by the actual wrongdoers. Many of those accounts belong to entire businesses, universities, or hospitals,

meaning that termination would end service for thousands of innocent users.

But no matter, a jury awarded the rights holders a billion dollar verdict against the ISP.
