Cromwell has played pretty effectively on the

international stage. He has struggled to build political consensus and the protectorates still relies

way too much on the army for political stability, though. We have had the dreadful misstep of

attempted moral reformation and the mercifully short-lived a rule of the

major generals with deeply divisive decimation taxes required to support it. But we now maybe

have sailed into calmer waters with the defeat of the military faction by the moderates in Parliament

and the 1657 Constitution.

There we go. It's a very high-level super summary. I do hope you recognise it.

Now we're going to spend some time talking about softer matters. We are going to spend

three episodes talking about cultural stuff. So if politics is your thing,
