0:00.0 | Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. When I was in high school I got a job at |
0:09.8 | Hardee's. You may have never heard of it. It's a fast food restaurant in the Midwest. It's similar to McDonald's. |
0:16.0 | I had had previous jobs before, but I decided on this job I was going to do my best, and I was hired to make French fries. So I was going to do my best and I was hired to make French fries. |
0:24.0 | So I was going to be the best French fry maker possible. |
0:28.0 | So I was making Prince fries keeping up with the orders and when it was slow I'd go wipe things down and clean things up and make sure that my French fries were ready for the next order. |
0:37.0 | And I really had no goal in mind except to be a really good French fry maker. That was it. |
0:42.0 | Well, what I didn't know what happened was the management |
0:46.1 | liked how hard I worked and they started promoting me and putting me in other positions and after |
0:51.7 | about six months I became shift supervisor. |
0:54.0 | Then I think it was about six months or a year later they had some problems with the |
0:58.4 | management and they didn't have anyone to run the restaurant because a manager |
1:01.6 | was sick and on leave so they had me to |
1:04.0 | run everything and I was a full-time student in high school so it was a lot of |
1:07.8 | responsibility and I was very busy but again my focus initial focus was just on being really good and making french fries. |
1:16.0 | That's the one thing I could control and do, and I did that. |
1:20.0 | It turned out that it turned into other things, but actually in the long run I ended up getting fired because I didn't know this but the manager was actually stealing from the store. |
1:30.0 | And I think he thought, I thought, I knew that, but I I didn't so he fired me that was out of my control. |
1:36.3 | What was in my control was just doing really good job and making French fries. |
1:41.0 | And with that came some good things, because when we work at things hard and do our best, often good things come from that. But not always, I ended up getting fired, remember that. |
1:52.8 | So what is in our control is what we can control, |
1:56.6 | and that's what we have to decide in life what's in our control. |
2:00.4 | I also remember at one time, one of my friends asked, asked hey if you ever thought about not going to college and instead working your way up the ladder at Hardys. |
