Hello, Guilty Feminist. This is Deborah. We have an amazing interview this week with Nages, Mohamedi.

And she's just talked to Margaret Atwood. It's an incredible honour that we've got to talk to her because she's only out of prison for a very short period of time.

She grew up in Iran and studied physics at university before beginning her career as an engineer.

She was always very

outspoken about women's rights and was arrested and imprisoned multiple times. In 2015, she began a 16-year

sentence for founding an illegal group, assembly and collision against national security and propaganda

against the system. All these things are heavily inadverted commas, as she says in the

episode today, she was in prison for being a feminist. She was released in 2020, but sent back to

prison in 2021. She issued a report in 2022 detailing the sexual and physical abuse of detained women,

including time spent in solitary confinement.

And she was still incarcerated when she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023,

which was received on her behalf by her children.

She's out briefly at the moment because she's had an operation,

and she's been allowed a short extension to recover.

One thing that she said really reminded me of a recent conversation I had with Gloria Steinem.

I was lucky enough in New York to go to a roundtable hosted by Gloria Steinem. And afterwards, I said to

her, look, I'm so sorry about Roe versus Wade being overturned. I know you spent decades of your life,

trying to get abortion legalized nationally. And, you know, she's 90. I was like, this is your legacy.

And I just wanted to say, I'm sorry.

And she just smiled and said, you know what?

We had abortion before Roe.
