I read somewhere that it cost $60,000 to raise a child.

That's enough to keep that nursery empty, isn't it?

$60,000.

By the time you pay for the medical expenses, the clothing, the food, anything you may ever want to do for education, $60,000.

And I'm confident that whoever conducted that survey didn't have daughters.

So let's suppose, for the sake of a conversation, that is an accurate number.

And let's suppose that you have a really bright 10-year-old son who comes to you with a proposal.

Mom, dad. I read here that $60,000 is what it's going to take for you to raise me.

I've got a proposal.

Just give me the whole amount right now, and I'll get out of your hair.

Just cut me a check, and I'll get out of your way.

Well, you're not going to go for that.

Even if you had $60,000, you wouldn't go for that,

because a 10-year-old doesn't know how to manage $60,000.
