Heroes this week we are playing the price of coal

A storytelling game about labor rights and the Battle of Blair Mountain.

It's a historical role-playing game that explores an event in history that isn't well taught in American schools,

although it should be, because it is a dark and uncomfortable time

in the history of America's labor movement, when coal barons were able to exploit

their workers with complete impunity and the full support of the US government, to the point that the military

bombarded US citizens to protect the capital interests of the coal industry.

For many listeners this is going to be an emotional ride and I have to admit it will not be one of our cheerier series here on one shot but I am so impressed with the design of this game.

Like Red Carnations on a Black Grave,

which inspired this design,

this game allows players to insert themselves into history,

to learn and experience a difficult period in history by embodying a role.

Designer Jennifer Adcock paid special attention to making sure that people who are usually written out of history books aren't cast aside or swallowed up in favor of having an all-white cast.

It's an exciting next step in the refreshing trend of historical role-playing

approached in a way that undermines a lot of harmful

tropes. I hope that appeals to you because the price of coal is up on

Kickstarter right now and as of this recording they have already hit their funding goal.
