Four jurors were selected today in the trial of three men who were accused in connection with the death of Harvard football player Andrew Popolo. Art Cohen reports from Suffolk's Superior Court.

Racial overtones have been evident in this case from the beginning. The alleged victims were white football players from Harvard, apparently in the combat zone for a night on the town.

Two of them, Thomas Lincoln and Stephen Saxon, suffered only minor injuries.

The third, Andrew Popolo, eventually died of stab wounds.

The three defendants in the case are black.

Richard Allen, Edward Sores, and Leon Easterling are all charged with murder in connection

with Popolo's death. Judge James Roy, among other things, asked each prospective juror

if the racial composition of the defendants and the alleged victims would affect the jurors' judgment

in the case, and he dismissed several prospective jurors who said they were not sure.

One of the defense attorneys noted at one point during the proceeding that out of almost 70 prospective jurors,

only four were black. The defense also charged the prosecution with using his preemptory challenges

to systematically exclude blacks from the jury.

In fact, Assistant District Attorney Thomas Monday used his right to challenge without cause three of the black jurors.

The fourth was dismissed by Judge Roy because of prejudice.
