My heart dog Poppy, a black and white show type Cocker Spaniel, was sadly euthanized in April

this year at the grand age of 13. She was everything to me. We had been stuck together like

glue since I was 16 when a family member dumped a bouncing, ear-licking, zoomying, 10-month-old Spaniel on our doorstep.

Despite being told, she was to be fostered for two weeks whilst we found a suitable home for her.

We've been together through house moves, broken ankles, mine, not, too many exams and essays, endless nights of wanting

to give up on my training for the career I now love, we did it all. She was always snuggled into my left

side where a tattoo now resides of her, or shouting at me that it was meal time at dead on 6pm.

When Poppy got poorly, it was swift and sudden. I am fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your

views, a veterinary nurse and was able to bring her straight to work where she had a million tests

and the heavy drugs which left her very

sleepy and I don't even think she knew I was there. We discovered that she had developed

necrotising pancreatitis. On the day we decided it was time, my then-fiancee, now husband, was

working away. So my colleagues allowed me to sit in the flat upstairs, where we stay when doing our on-call shifts,

and spend the shift snuggling her, kissing her head and telling her how grateful I was that she landed in my life.

I was so grateful for my wonderful fellow nurses for allowing me those precious few hours to thank my best friend for everything that she did.
