Now, Mr. Brisbane, is there not one more lost item left for us this evening?

Yes, there is. And it is perhaps the strangest story I know of. I am very cautious in making such a claim,

but in all of my many years as a newspaper man,

I never came across anything odder than what you're about to hear now.

Nellie Bly's story of the Band of Mercy,

as it appeared in the New York world,

on New Year's Eve in 1893,

was bizarre enough on its own merits,

but what no one knows is that the published story

only just scratched the surface.

It all began when Nellie picked up a lead based on the following account.

It took place on West 125th Street of Manhattan in the fall of 1893.
