As y'all will recall, when we left off last time, it was August 19th, 1863, and William

Quantrol and the other rebel bushwhackers had set off riding from Western Missouri toward

the Kansas border, aiming to avenge the death and maiming of some of their women folk after

the collapse of a building in Kansas City that was being used as a makeshift jail by the

fedrals.

Twenty-six-year-old William Clark Quantrol had been born in a small town in Ohio, some 80

miles south of Cleveland.

At the age of 16, he began teaching in his hometown, then in Illinois and in Indiana.

But in 1857, he began life anew as a farmer in Kansas.

Eager for Adventure, in 1857, he signed up as a teamster on the US Army expedition that

was marching to Utah, prepared to do battle with Brigham Young and his Mormon militia.

Then, after prospecting for gold in Colorado, he returned to Kansas, taught for a while,

then moved to Lawrence, where he came to despise James Lane and became convinced it was

the Jayhuckers who were responsible for the border troubles, with their raids into Western

Missouri, to free slaves and to loot and plunder.

Quantrol eventually became involved with those who worked clandestinely to return livestock

and fugitive slaves to their owners in Missouri.
