Summary

Rubén J. Carbajal (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton on Broadway) is back for another round! This week, he talks about his multiple Hamilton auditions and explains his process: the flights, the preparation, the importance of always showing his personality, and the beauty of staying curious. Rubén talks about his experience on tour, the full circle moment of bringing Hamilton home to Los Angeles, and what it was like performing with Lin-Manuel Miranda in Puerto Rico.

And then… Rubén thought he was done with Hamilton in 2022 but some time away, a writers’ strike, and a very supportive partner led him to Broadway.

0:33.5

Rubin has been performing in one way or another since he was five years old,

0:36.5

but it wasn't until he did in the Heights for the first time that he felt truly connected to a role.

0:40.5

As he said last week, if not for Heights, he doesn't know if he would have had the drive to keep going in this industry.

0:45.0

That show gave him something to hold on to, knowing that people who look like him can be the main character and have their stories told.

0:50.0

But then Hamilton came along and like so many of us Ruben was a

0:53.7

super fan first and foremost. I have to tell you it was so fun to revisit the

0:58.3

early days of the Hamilton universe. Do you remember that? Like we all kind of

1:01.8

couldn't believe what we were hearing and all we wanted to do was share it with people and tell people about it and we were having listening parties with friends and we were trying to like sneak historical facts into conversation knowing it would lead back to

1:13.3

Hamilton. It was just like no gatekeeping, just excitedly being so

1:18.2

enthusiastic about the whole thing. It was such a clear moment in time and it's

1:22.2

amazing because now Rubin gets to be a part of it.

1:24.0

So last week ended with Rubin having one of the busiest and most important days of his life.

1:28.0

He had a great audition in New York and immediately got a call back for a work session with Tommy and Lack.

1:32.0

He went to a Mets game with Tommy and Lach.

1:32.8

He went to a Mets game to celebrate and even though he didn't see Hamilton,
