In the face of those rebel attacks, the Federal's defending the high ground were hanging on

with grim desperation, but their situation was steadily deteriorating.

Meanwhile, six miles away, Union Major General Gordon Granger had been making the decision

of his life as a soldier.

Station north of the battlefield at Rossville Gap, with orders to hold that point, he had

fredded through the sounds of battle the day before.

Then when Sunday the 20th brought even more intense thunders from the south and mounting
