| 0:42.0 | April 20th, 1861. After his resignation from the army, Lee quickly applied |
| 0:48.0 | himself to the task of setting Virginia on a war footing. During his |
| 0:52.4 | supervision of his native states mobilization, Lee remained mostly |
| 0:56.4 | in Richmond. Also in Richmond at the time was Confederate Vice President |
| 1:01.0 | Alexander Stevens. Stevens was there to champion the establishing of close |
| 1:06.6 | relations between the Confederate government and Virginia, even though the old |
| 1:11.3 | dominion's secession wouldn't be official until it was ratified by the state's |
| 1:17.0 | voters on May 23rd. Stevens' mission was obviously a success, since as we |
| 1:23.6 | mentioned previously on the podcast, well before that may referendum. On April |
| 1:29.2 | 27th, the Virginia legislature invited the Confederate government to select |
| 1:34.0 | Richmond as its new capital. But in April, Alexander Stevens was also concerned |
| 1:39.6 | to sound out Robert E. Lee and secure Lee's loyalty to the larger cause of the |
| 1:44.6 | Confederacy. Lee affirmed that he would not quibble or quarrel about matters of |
| 1:49.6 | rank and status in the new southern army, and that he would mobilize Virginia's |
| 1:54.0 | military forces and cooperate in any way he could with the Confederate |
| 1:58.0 | government. But Robert E. Lee's activities in Virginia were by no means unique. |
