Summary

Hello Beauties! On this week's Five Minute Friday, we are talking all about mentorship. Throughout our lives, we meet people who shape and cultivate our behaviors and skills. Individuals who share their experiences to help us to grow in our knowledge and become better versions of ourselves. These individuals come in many different forms, and I have been thankful enough to have had some amazing mentors on my path to being a being badass, girl boss injector. I now try to exemplify that same energy as those who taught me and strive to share my expertise with the younger generation. If you were interested in learning more about my mentors or how you can find/provide mentorship, make sure to check out this amazing podcast!

Well, hello, hello, guys. You're listening to Beauty Bites with Dr. K, Secrets of a Plastic Surgeon, and it's time for a five-minute Friday.

0:24.2

Today's podcast is all about mentoring. And this is an important topic to me. I recently went to a conference with the relaunch of one of my favorite product, sculpture.

0:36.2

And it was so delightful for me to see people

0:39.5

from all stages of my career and people who have taught me from my beginnings before I knew what

0:45.5

sculpture was till today and I just wanted to look back with some gratitude about it I think

0:51.6

mentorship is something that we don't do enough for each other.

0:55.0

I think in aesthetics, it's a very competitive field. Aesthetics is a field where sometimes you feel

1:01.6

excluded as a new person entering aesthetics. It's like, first of all, an old boys club. And second

1:08.3

of all, it's kind of like this dramatic, exciting field where

1:12.2

you're a newbie and you know very little and everybody else knows more than you and they're fancier than

1:16.3

you and sexier than you and better than you. And there's so much imposter syndrome that we carry

1:22.2

in ourselves that it's important to conquer that fear because to be good in aesthetics, you have to be

1:29.2

confident in yourself and you have to be confident that you can deliver patient outcomes.

1:34.7

Half of it is what you portray when you're talking and giving beauty consultations, the way that

1:40.4

you say things, the confidence that you portray to your patience, it all comes from

1:44.3

internal. It comes from years of experience. That you got to earn the hard way. It comes from

1:50.1

lots of volume and patience in your chair. You also got to earn that the hard way. But mentorship,

1:56.4

the guidance that's provided by people who are more experienced than you, more educated than you, that is critical.

2:04.7

And I've often heard this quote that a mentor is not someone who walks ahead of you to show you how they did it.

2:12.3

They walk alongside you to show you what you can do.

2:16.2

And they believe in you at a time when you don't know that you have it in you to be good at the things that you want to achieve. So I think the positivity, the optimism and hope that a mentor can give you and the idea that you can learn from other people's failures is so powerful.

2:36.0

In our profession in plastic surgery and aesthetic surgery, it's a very secretive profession.
