Summary

Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci's stoic portrait and one of the most valuable paintings on earth, came to America during the winter of 1963 and was received as though she were a rock star. At the Met, thousands lined up outside in the freezing cold to catch a glimpse of the painting.

to America's largest museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The museum was incorporated by the State of New York in 1870, opened its first exhibitions

in 1872, and then finally moved to its new home in Central Park in the year 1880.

And from that moment, the museum has only expanded in size and scope.

Today containing hundreds of thousands of valuable works of art.

And 60 years ago this month, in February of 1963, the Met made room for one more painting.

Perhaps the world's most famous painting of them all, the enigmatic Mona Lisa,

painted by Leonardo da Vinci in about 1503.

And since 1804, she's called the Louvre Home in Paris.

And honestly, it's really kind of hard to believe today that the Louvre would ever loan out
