As you guys will recall, when we left our last time, the struggle for the La Thea at

Road was really heating up in the vicinity of Vineyard Field.

Remember, for Federal Commander William Rosecranes, holding the road was important because it

was his army's primary connection to Rossville just to the north and beyond Rossville to

Chattanooga.

As y'all will recall, as we talked about a few episodes ago, in the brutal, confused fighting

on the north end of the battlefield, the Confederates had come close to capturing the stretch of

road in the vicinity of Brotherton Field and Poe Field.

But they had been unable to seal the deal, and so the La Faye at Road remained a contested

objective in that sector.

It was well inside Federal lines north of the Poe House, but was in no man's land south

of that location.

But when we left our last time, farther to the south along the road, around Vineyard Field,

the issue was still in doubt that afternoon.

In the vicinity of the Vineyard Cabin, the road was full of Federal officers trying to

rally the disorganized elements of Carlin's and Barns Brigades, which had been routed

out of Vineyard Field by the Confederates.
