Summary

Is it possible to grow protein-packed vegetables in your garden? In this episode, we break it down for you! Building on last week’s conversation with Dr. Vickie Petz Kasper about the importance of plant-based proteins, I’m sharing which crops are worth your time, space, and effort.

We’ll cover:

  • Dry beans like pinto, kidney, and black beans
  • Shelling beans such as black-eyed peas and lima beans
  • Chickpeas, lentils, edamame, and more

Discover the growing requirements, space needs, and harvest realities of these crops to decide if they’re the right fit for your garden. I’ll also share my honest take on which ones I recommend skipping and how to get the most from the ones you do plant.

Plus, don’t miss the details about my live Winter Workshop on January 21st, focusing on seed starting and planting. Learn more and register at journeywithjill.net/winterworkshop.

Is it possible to grow protein-packed vegetables in your garden? And if so, what does it take to be successful?

0:08.6

In last week's episode, you heard from Dr. Vicki Pets Casper, a friend of mine who also practices

0:14.3

lifestyle medicine, and she talked about the importance of including plant-based proteins in our diets. It's easy after listening

0:22.9

to a conversation like that to decide, I want to plant them all, and I for sure have been

0:28.2

guilty of impulsively deciding to plant everything I possibly could without zooming out to the

0:34.4

big picture to decide if planting all of that was worth the space, the time,

0:39.9

and the resources that I had available. With that in mind, today I'm going to lay out the facts

0:45.6

for you so that you can decide which, if any, of these protein-packed vegetables are going to

0:51.5

be worth it for you to grow in your garden. We'll talk about dry

0:55.1

beans like kidney, pinto, and black beans. We'll talk about shelling beans like black eyed peas and

1:01.7

lima beans. And then we'll also talk about peas, shelling peas, lentils, and edamame. We'll learn about

1:09.0

how each of these grows best and how much space is required.

1:13.0

I'll be honest with you, I don't recommend that you grow all of them, and I'll explain to you

1:18.0

the ones that might be more difficult or maybe not worth your time in space. But others,

1:21.9

you may choose to grow, and I want you to get started out right so that you can grow these

1:26.7

successfully.

1:32.2

In my experience with the ones of these that I have grown, they're actually not that hard once you learn the basics. So let's dive in to talking about growing these plant-based proteins.

easy to understand conversations about how to grow your own food. As a first time gardener myself 11 years ago,

1:53.4

I remember what it's like to feel overwhelmed. So I want to make gardening so doable for you

1:59.1

that you'll find yourself falling in love with gardening

2:02.0

just like I did. Let's dig in. If you're new here, thank you for joining me on the Beginners
